Weekly Reading Tip – Empathy Day

Dear Parents,

Our aim for the children of Burford is that they leave our school as respectful, kind and considerate individuals and key to this is their capacity to empathise with those around them.

Empathy is the ability to share someone else’s feelings or experiences by imagining what it would be like to be in that person’s situation. This Tuesday, 11th June, was Empathy Day in the UK.  A wonderful website, called EmpathyLab, who aim to build empathy in children through literacy, have compiled a list of books which are aimed at building empathy in the reader for the characters in the books. Reading books like this will build a child’s skill in being able to understand and consider those around them, an essential life skill.

Have a look at their website on:

The  BookforTopics twitter feed this week highlighted a range of top reads recommended by the Empathy Lab, aimed at building empathy which is also worth having a look at on Twitter @booksfortopics (#empathyday2019).

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs Puddephatt, Mrs Andrews, Mrs Barton
