Wellbeing Tip

Dear Parents,

This week’s wellbeing tip comes from one of our parents who has kindly shared their expertise with us. Zara Watt is a local nutritionist (and Burford parent) with a real interest in children’s diets as well as the use of essential oils. I hope you enjoy this week’s tip and a big thank you to Zara for offering her advice.

Did you know that in 2017, less than 20% of children aged 5-15 years consumed the recommended 5 portions of fruits and vegetables per day?

Fruits and vegetables contain lots of vitamins and minerals that help keep our kids healthy, and are a great source of dietary fibre. Fruits and veggies come in lots of different colours, and they all contain different vitamins and minerals, so it’s important to eat a variety of different coloured fruits and vegetables every day, and literally “eat a rainbow”.

·         Red fruits and veggies help keep our heart strong

·         Orange fruits and veggies help keep our eyes healthy

·         Yellow fruits and veggies help keep us from getting sick

·         Green fruits and veggies help make our bones and teeth strong

·         Blue and purple fruits and veggies help our memory

Ideally children should be having around 2 portions of fruit a day and at least 3 portions of vegetables a day. But kids can be incredibly fussy when it comes to eating their veg! So vegetables can be ‘hidden’ in pasta sauce or spaghetti bolognese, added to soups and smoothies, or even added to homemade muffins.

Get the kids involved by seeing if they can eat 1 fruit or veg from each colour category every day.
