Newsletter - 23rd November 2007
Dear Parents/Friends/Guardians

Well done to everyone, we raised £225 for Children in Need this year! Thank you to all of you who brought in loose change and to Mrs Slater for counting it all!

Christmas Bazaar
Don’t forget to keep sending in items for the Christmas Bazaar on Friday 30th November. KS1 will be visiting the bazaar from 10.45 – 11.45 and KS2 from 1.15 – 2.15. Please help us by sending in Tombola prizes, toys, books, games, bric-a-brac, handicrafts and toiletries. Cakes need to be brought in on the morning of 30th November.

DCSF
The Department for Children, Schools and Families (previously DfES) requires all schools to have a SEF (School Evaluation Form) as part of managing the school’s performance. We regularly update our SEF and we are fortunate in that our Local Authority School Improvement Partner has offered us his assistance in helping us baseline Burford’s current and anticipated performance. As such your child may notice an increase of visitors in their classrooms in early December.

ICT Suite Stools
Thank you to FOB for buying the lovely new stools for the ICT Suite! The chairs that were in the suite are now being used in Cherry class, as their’s were of a poor quality and had been breaking daily! For health and safety reasons they had to be replaced and since the chairs in the ICT suite were too big, this seemed the ideal solution!

Library system
I hope you all received the letter about the new computerised library system. We were lucky to be able to purchase the software in the previous financial year using up the school’s remaining e-learning credits. These are ring-fenced and can only be used to buy computer software. This will be of great benefit to the children and should be in operation shortly.

Music CD
The music CD’s are selling out fast! If you still wish to purchase one, the cost is £10, and they are available from the school office.

Visits
Y4’s trip to Hampton Court Palace was fantastic. The children as usual behaved beautifully. It was the end of a series of visits to compare Tudor life. The children have now experienced a farm house, manor house and now a palace. Legion XIIII came to visit Y3 for their Roman day. The children dressed up as Goddesses, Roman soldiers and Centurians amongst other things. They played Roman games and handled Roman artefacts. A huge amount was learnt and a good time was had by all.
Orienteering
A team of orienteers, some as young as Year 3, went to Bovingdon in Dorset to compete in the British Schools’ Orienteering Championships. We overcame a major problem when the coach had a tyre damaged in the car park overnight; when, with the help of parents who had come to spectate, the early starters were ferried to the event in order not to miss their start times. The rain poured down, the wind blew, but the children made light of the atrocious weather. Well protected against the elements with cagoules, hats and even gloves they all finished their courses smiling and very at ease.
They were, as ever, a pleasure to take away. Everyone ran brilliantly and despite the abandonment of the official prize giving, the end of the competition saw Burford retain their National Primary Schools’ title. The Year 5 boys and girls and Year 6 girls were runners up in their age groups, while the Year 6 boys won their class.
Outstanding performances came from Phoebe Mansfield 2nd in Year 6 girls; Harvey Barber 2nd in Year 6 boys; while Olivia Gooddy and Thomas Salmon won the Year 5 girls and Year 6 boys classes respectively.
A terrific weekend for lots of children.
