Over the last 6 years, Burford School has
developed a particularly active and well-supported travel plan, for which the
overall aim are to encourage and support the use of sustainable transport (i.e.
walking, park & walk, car share, cycling, scootering) , both
to and
from school.
A sustainable approach means that we are more environmentally friendly and helps to tackle some of the challenges that Burford School faces, namely:
Reducing traffic congestion around the school during drop-off and pick-up times. Increased traffic and badly parked cars reduce visibility and increase the likelihood of an accident.
Making the routes to school safer for children. As drivers: observing the speed limits and manoeuvring cars carefully. For children: improving road safety skills and understanding of the dangers on the road.
Being mindful of residents who live close to school. Blocked driveways and churned-up verges are an issue.
To encourage children (and parents!) to adopt a healthy lifestyles through more fresh air and exercise.
To address some of our challenges, Burford operates the following initiatives:
Go for Gold (GfG) – an incentive based scheme developed to encourage children and their parents to use sustainable travel modes for the school journey (both to and from school).
A ‘Crocodile Trail’ – a ‘walking bus’ which runs from one end of the Marlow Bottom valley.
‘Footsteps’ training – a training programme in 3 stages which teaches pupils practical road safety skills under the guidance of an accredited tutor.
Cycling skills – Burford runs 2 levels of cycle training; Biking Basics for 7-9yr olds and Cycling Awareness for 9-11yr olds, run by accredited trainers.
The appointment of 2 JRSO’s (Junior Road Safety Officers) each year to support the travel initiatives.
Many events and competitions throughout the year to support travel planning initiatives
If you would like to get involved in supporting some of our travel initiatives, please contact Burford’s School Travel Co-ordinators via the school office.
Burford is one of the few schools that has been awarded a gold award from Bucks County Council for achieving a ‘Level 3 Plan’ for more than 3 years. This award, in turn, enables us to apply for funding to support our future travel initiatives.
It is therefore important that we maintain interest and momentum for travel planning. This is only possible with support from parents, as the school staff as well as the wider community.
If you would like to know more, please contact Deborah Krolikowski or Brid Hayward.
