Teaching for Mastery at Burford School

Maths teaching at Burford School is underpinned by a mastery approach. Maths - No Problem! (MNP) forms the basis of lessons to ensure consistency of Maths teaching across the school. To ensure that lessons are carefully planned, tackling concepts in small steps, which build on each other following a coherent journey, teachers also utilise the curriculum prioritisation resources from the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM). Lessons are tailored to the children, carefully crafted scaffolding prompts conceptual understanding and, where necessary, specific planned interventions are carried out.

Maths - No Problem! (MNP) is a series of textbooks and workbooks written to meet the requirements of the 2014 Maths National Curriculum. The MNP Primary Series was assessed by the DfE’s expert panel, which judged that it met the core criteria for a high-quality textbook to support teaching for mastery. As a result, the MNP Primary Series are recommended textbooks for schools on the mastery programme.

Mastering Number Programme

In Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, children are able to develop fluency in calculation and a flexibility with number through the support of the Mastering Number Programme. Within these sessions, children are given opportunities to clearly communicate their mathematical ideas and develop depth in understanding by becoming mathematically observant, looking for relationships and explaining their thinking. Please see the document ‘Burford School Mastering Number Overview’ below for more information.
